To celebrate its 30th anniversary, legendary first-person shooter Quake is getting a massive free content update called Dawn of the Machine. Built by MachineGames with id Software, the new game expands on the classic 1996 shooter, adding new levels, weapons, enemies and more for longtime fans.
The update follows QuakeCon 2026, which will mark 30 years of franchise legacy and the gaming community. The original Quake was one of the first 3D first-person shooters that established the template for the speed formula that modern games use.
Dawn of the Machine Adds 19 New Levels
The biggest addition is the new Dawn of the Machine campaign, with 19 new levels. Ranger is in a world of endless battle and perpetual illusions, searching desperately for a way out.
MachineGames to Build Upon the Dark Fantasy Atmosphere of the Original Game, While Retaining Its Classic Fast-Paced Combat For the New Quake Content. The new episode is a free update for those playing the current version of Quake.
Better gameplay new weapons new types of enemies
The Anniversary update also brings new weapon variants for players to blast their way through the campaign. Other additions include the Super Axe that chains lightning and the Laser Cannon that fires projectiles that ricochet around environments and hit enemies from unexpected angles.
New enemy types also bring new challenges, providing players who have already run the campaign more motivation to experience the revamped campaign rather than just replay familiar levels.
Players can explore Quake’s development history
The anniversary update features some archival footage from the making of Quake and a new campaign. Players get a chance to see the early levels that were never finished and other materials that show how the original game was developed during production.
Archive material gives fans a rare glimpse at experiments and unfinished ideas from the development process. Some early maps never saw the light of day, giving us a behind-the-scenes look at the work that would eventually help define one of gaming’s most influential shooters.
Classic Quake Experience Living Strong on New Platforms
The new Quake features better graphics, modern multiplayer, cross-play, and more content from the community and the company. It’s the latest game from Bethesda for PC, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch so that the old and new fans alike can enjoy the classic shooter on modern hardware.
So the 30th Anniversary Celebration is more than a nostalgic look back, giving the original game a new, meaty content update while helping to ensure its classic campaign and multiplayer experience is available to a new generation of players.
