Anthony Joshua staged one of the most dramatic comebacks of his career as he recovered from two first-round knockdowns to stop Kristian Prenga in the second round at the Jeddah Superdome in Saudi Arabia. The heavyweight clash took an unexpected turn almost immediately as Prenga landed huge punches and dropped the former champion twice in the first round.
Joshua entered the fight seeking to make a good comeback after a long layoff from competitive boxing. Instead he came under early pressure from an opponent who arrived into the fight with a reputation for punching power. The 36-year-old British heavyweight eventually regained control and finished off the contest before Prenga could take advantage of his remarkable start.
Joshua Twice Drops Kristian Prenga
Prenga floored Joshua with a right uppercut 20 seconds into the first round to send the British fighter to the canvas. Joshua was able to regain his footing and continue but Prenga was quick to stay on the offensive instead of allowing his more experienced opponent a chance to get comfortable in the fight.
The Albanian heavyweight then found another opening later in the opening round and landed a second knockdown. The first three minutes, as Joshua tried to withstand Prenga’s onslaught, looked shaky and proved to be amongst the most difficult part of Joshua’s recent career.
Prenga’s aggressive start was very impressive, especially considering Joshua’s experience at the highest level of heavyweight boxing. The ex-champion was expected to dominate the contest with his size, jab and technical prowess but Prenga’s power forced him into survival mode before the fight had even developed.
Joshua turns it around in round two
Joshua returned for the second round with a completely different strategy. He instead started to take away the distance and apply pressure with his jab and longer punches to keep the Albanian fighter under pressure. Joshua started to push Prenga back and was able to land cleaner combinations.
The adjustment was quick to shift the momentum. Joshua took some heavy shots earlier but was composed and began to attack Prenga with greater confidence. His capacity to recover between rounds and to establish his own tempo straight away was decisive.
The first unified heavyweight champion eventually connected with a powerful combination that sent Prenga into the ropes. The referee stepped in as Prenga tried to continue, ending the fight in the second round.
Joshua’s Comeback Becomes the Big Story
The victory meant more to Joshua than just the official result as it proved he could come back from serious adversity. “To be knocked down twice in the first round could have really changed the fight but Joshua reacted straight away and won the fight before it became a long test.
And so it is another memorable chapter in the story of Joshua. His last fight in competition was a fifth-round knockout loss to Daniel Dubois in September 2024, so this comeback was especially important for a boxer trying to stay in the mix for major heavyweight fights.
Tyson Fury Fight Back On The Cards
Joshua’s victory also keeps alive the potential for a showdown with Tyson Fury. The all-British heavyweight clash has been talked about for so long and has been one of boxing’s biggest potential fights and Joshua’s successful return helps keep those plans alive.
And Fury also fought and won against Mariusz Wach in Thailand the same weekend. Speculation surrounding a potential clash has once again intensified with both fighters having now completed their respective comeback assignments.
It wasn’t easy for Joshua to perform but the sensational comeback made the win memorable. He showed vulnerability early, adjusted fast and produced a second round stoppage that kept the momentum rolling towards another big heavyweight opportunity.
