Physical PlayStation discs may be a thing of the past as Sony plans a major shift to digital distribution, modular hardware and cloud-connected gaming. The change could change the way players buy, access, trade and keep games on future PlayStation consoles.

Future PlayStation Consoles Might Feature Modular Hardware

Sony may continue to make consoles that can have an attachable disc drive rather than putting one in every system.

A modular design would let customers buy a cheaper digital console and add physical-game support later. Manufacturing could be streamlined, too, as Sony wouldn’t have to come up with completely different interior designs for disc and digital versions.

Physical Discs Still Have Major Advantages

Many players still prefer discs because they are able to buy used games, lend titles to friends, and also resell finished releases.

Retail sales can also mean cheaper physical copies too. They are a visible collection, and may also be able to retain access when a game is removed from a digital storefront.

Therefore, disc-based media may remain appealing to collectors, preservation groups and consumers with limited internet access.

Game Ownership Might Become a Bigger Problem

Digital purchases generally grant a license to access content, instead of full ownership.

Players rely on access to the account, the platform’s servers and Sony’s licensing systems. Most of the popular games can be played offline after installation but some games need online verification or constant connection with the servers.

Sony will need to reassure customers that games they buy will remain available if services change down the line.

With cloud gaming , gamers can stream supported games instead of installing the entire game on their device. It has the ability to bring PlayStation experiences to handhelds, PCs, TVs, and other connected screens.

Technology still needs fast, reliable internet service. Input lag, picture quality, data caps and game selection are still issues.
