Diamondbacks Beat Dodgers – The Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 Friday night, Aug. 7, at Chase Field in Phoenix. The game was decided in the bottom of the ninth when rookie Ryan Waldschmidt hit a two-run walk-off home run off Dodgers’ closer Edwin Díaz. The win was another huge one for Arizona over its division rival.
Waldschmidt’s game-winning homer was the best moment of the night. Waldschmidt provides walk-off heroics The rally opened with a walk to Max Kepler to get a runner on for Arizona. Then Jorge Barrosa came in to pinch run and stole second. Waldschmidt was now in position to tie the game. The game was still within reach.
Waldschmidt struck out twice, but the second one he hit a slider from Diaz out to left-center. It was his second career home run and his first walk-off homer in the majors, instantly turning a 3-2 Dodgers lead into a 4-3 Arizona win.
Merrill Kelly pitches strong start for Arizona
Arizona starter Merrill Kelly kept the Diamondbacks in the game, holding the Dodgers hitless for five innings. He departed after 5 2/3 innings due to leg cramps and ended the night with one run on two hits.
Given Kelly’s rocky history against the Dodgers, his performance was especially impressive. Before Friday’s game, he had never won a game in 18 career starts against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Dodgers Take Lead, Then Collapse in Ninth.
Andy Pages hit a long home run to put the Dodgers ahead 3-2 in the eighth. Los Angeles looked ready to snap a long losing streak and pick up a win after coming in having lost six straight games.
But the Dodgers couldn’t hold it in the ninth. Díaz served up the game-winning two-run homer to Waldschmidt, his seventh straight loss since joining Los Angeles.
Arizona Continues Strong Recent Streak
The Diamondbacks are 17-8 since July 9 and have won seven of 10. Nolan Arenado homered for Arizona and Geraldo Perdomo had a double, triple and RBI in the game
The victory extended Arizona’s recent dominance over Los Angeles, as the Diamondbacks won five straight meetings versus the Dodgers.
