There are reports of a new Assassin’s Creed Black Flag sequel following the story of one of the franchise’s most beloved characters, and that could be Edward Kenway back for another big adventure. The original Black Flag remains a fan favourite because of its pirate setting, naval combat, open-world exploration and Edward’s transformation from ambitious privateer to central figure in the Assassin–Templar conflict.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag introduced Edward Kenway as its main protagonist, and his story was a mix of pirate fantasy and franchise lore.
Edward, unlike many of the earlier protagonists, was not initially a committed Assassin. His journey slowly pulls him into the conflict between Assassins and Templars and gives the character a different sort of personal arc.
That growth is part of why his fans continue to ask for more of his story.
Edward’s later years could be explored in a sequel
Black Flag’s ending is open-ended enough for another adventure.
Edward’s story continues after the game, and the wider Assassin’s Creed canon provides more information about his family, his ties to the Brotherhood and his later life in England.
There’s a possibility that a sequel could explore that time period and introduce new locations, friends and enemies.
However, no details of the story have been confirmed until Ubisoft reveals the project.
Navy Could Return to Combat in a Larger Way
One of the defining features of Black Flag was its naval gameplay.
Players could navigate the Jackdaw, attack enemy ships, search for treasure, upgrade their ship and explore a large Caribbean map. That system helped set the game apart from other entries in the franchise.
A modern sequel could greatly expand naval combat, with bigger battles, more detailed ship customisation, better weather effects and deeper exploration.
Technology May Reshape Pirate World
A fresh game made for today’s generation of hardware could bring major visual and technical improvements.
More detailed oceans, larger settlements, real storms, better crowd systems and faster loading could make for a much more dynamic pirate setting than the original 2013 release.
Ubisoft could also leverage newer technology to improve the transitions between sailing, exploration, combat, and big story missions, making them more seamless.
Fans Want To Hold Onto The Black Flag Vibe
There’s a lot for any sequel to live up to.
Players really like Black Flag for letting them explore freely instead of forcing all activities into a tight structure. It had its own identity, combining naval combat, islands, treasure hunting, diving, and old-school Assassin missions.
You would expect a sequel to keep that open feeling but also improve systems that now feel dated.
Edward’s Family May Become More Important
Edward Kenway also has major ties to other important characters in the franchise.
His family history is Black Flag’s history, and that ties it to later games and characters, and gives a sequel a chance to expand the larger Kenway story.
That connection could allow Ubisoft to hop between different eras in the franchise without retreading events fans already know.
