Rockstar Co-Founder Says Games Should Come on Disc-2

“The next iteration of Grand Theft Auto 6 has sparked a much larger conversation about the future of physical video games. Rockstar Games has confirmed that GTA 6 will be available in physical stores but there will be no game disc in the box. Instead, buyers will get a digital download code for the game. Some gamers are upset by the move, hoping for a more traditional physical release of one of the most hyped games of recent years.

Today, the launch platforms for Rockstar are the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X|S. The physical Standard Edition comes out on November 12, with the game itself being in stores November 19, 2026. The weird packaging is so that players can download the game before it’s released.

Dan Houser: Games for the Real Life

In the discussion about physical copies of games there was some interesting things to say from Dan Houser, one of the lead writers for the Grand Theft Auto series and co-founder of Rockstar Games. “I’m not one way or the other on digital or physical,” Houser said at San Diego Comic-Con, “but I think the companies should give a physical option for the player if they want it.

The comments come at an important time for the sector. Houser helped develop some of Rockstar’s biggest games before leaving the company in 2020. His experience working on Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, Bully and other massive projects makes his point of view all the more relevant when it comes to Rockstar and physical releases.

Why GTA 6 Needs a Physical Disc

For many gamers, the controversy is more than just a box on a store shelf. Physical discs provide the feeling of ownership, the ability to resell or lend games to someone else, and something for collectors to hold on to. And then there’s the fact that you can still purchase physical copies when digital storefronts change or old games become hard to find.

What’s so controversial about GTA 6 for collectors is that it’s code-in-a-box. You receive a physical package with a code to download it. The digital download and platform account/store infrastructure still needs to be built. Some fans are feeling that there should be a physical disc to choose from, considering the magnitude of the release and the cultural impact of GTA 6.

The advantages of a digital release

And Houser also saw huge upside in modern, digital distribution: Games can be updated and patched after release. This allows developers to address technical problems and improve the experience over time. Games are becoming larger and more complex, making this ability even more important.

Digital distribution is okay, too. Players can download games and use digital purchases on supported accounts and consoles instead of waiting for a physical copy to arrive. For many consumers these benefits are more beneficial than the benefits of collecting discs. As the internet infrastructure and gaming hardware continue to evolve.

Sony’s Disc Drive Adds Pressure

GTA 6 is just one of many big changes coming to the console industry. Gamers who enjoy buying games on discs are fearing the end of an era after Sony announced it will cease making physical PlayStation games from January 2028. The message has prompted some discussion about ownership, preservation, and physical games becoming a niche product.

So, GTA 6 is more than just another big game launch. The physical-only digital version is coming when the industry is already going digital. At the centre of the battle is one of gaming’s biggest franchises, and the controversy could be another big milestone in the shift away from traditional physical media.
