Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is said to be adding Phoenix and Cyclops to its playable roster in its first piece of downloadable content. The addition brings two of the X-Men’s most recognisable characters into the fighting game, and gives players new combat styles to explore post-launch.
Phoenix and Cyclops are probably going to have very different takes in battle. Cyclops could specialise in controlled long-range attacks and team support and Phoenix could specialise in powerful energy-based abilities and high-damage special moves. However, the full move set, price, and the exact date of DLC release have not yet been independently confirmed.
Playable Roster Gets Phoenix and Cyclops
The announced DLC adds better X-Men representation to Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls. Both heroes have been around for a long time in the Marvel comics, animated shows, movies and video games, making them obvious choices for the post-launch character roster for the game.
Cyclops is a very disciplined leader, using his optic blasts with great precision. His style of fighting would let players manage distance, interrupt attacks and set up teammates.
Phoenix, however, is tied to the potent Phoenix Force. Her skills could make her one of the game’s most visually impressive characters, with fiery attacks, telekinetic movement, and explosive finishing moves.
Cyclops Can Be a Strong Zoning Character
Cyclops will probably appeal to players who prefer to keep their distance from their opponents. His optic blasts could be used as quick projectiles, anti-air attacks, or combo extensions.
He could also fit in nicely as an assist character in a team-based fighting system. A quick beam attack might help another fighter get in safely, or extend a combo. His leadership background could also affect his team-based abilities as well as his dialogue and animations.
Balance is going to be key, strong projectile characters can get tough to fight if their attacks are too fast or hard to avoid.
Phoenix May Provide High-Risk Power
Phoenix could produce a more aggressive and unpredictable style. Her abilities may include telekinesis, energy waves, flight, and Phoenix Force-based attacks.
It could be a transformation or power building mechanic that makes her stronger during a match. That sort of system would be in character, but it may need some careful balancing to keep her from becoming too powerful.
Phoenix will also be hit by cinematic super attacks that emphasise the scale of her cosmic powers.
First DLC could determine future character releases
The first character pack usually gives players an indication of how a fighting game will handle post-launch support. The inclusion of two big X-Men characters seems to indicate that the developers might be looking to other corners of the Marvel Universe as well.
More mutants, cosmic heroes, street level fighters or big bad villains could be in future DLC. How well Phoenix and Cyclops do may determine how fast new character announcements come.
Players will also watch to see if the DLC is part of a season pass, sold as a bundle or offered as separate purchases.
Fans Waiting for Gameplay Footage
The character names might be eye-catching but seeing gameplay footage will be key to see how each fighter actually performs. Fans will want to see the basic attacks, special moves, team assists, alternate costumes and finishing animations.
Depending on the footage we could also get to see if Phoenix is in her regular form or Dark Phoenix form or if she transforms in the middle of a fight. Cyclops could have classic and modern costume designs depending on the game’s customisation options.
Release Date and Pricing Still Matter
“The value of the DLC will be driven by price, release timing and amount of content. In addition to the two characters, some players might expect more stages, costumes, music, or story content.
Fans should be cautious of unofficial release dates and pricing claims until the publisher releases full details. Official announcements should confirm platform availability, season-pass options and whether Phoenix and Cyclops will be available immediately or released separately.
