Alibaba Open-Source AI Model Adds Revenue-Sharing Plan for Enterprise Users

Alibaba Open-Source AI Model – Alibaba is reportedly gearing up to introduce a revenue-sharing scheme with big commercial users of one of its open-source artificial intelligence models. Under the proposed arrangement, developers and companies could continue to use the model and share some of the revenue generated from the large-scale products and services built with it.

An Alibaba open-source AI revenue-sharing plan could reportedly be a big change in how big tech firms earn from open artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Open-source models are often promoted as flexible alternatives to closed platforms, but increasing development and infrastructure costs are making companies consider new business models.

Revenue sharing could take the place of traditional licensing

Under a revenue-sharing system, smaller developers could use the model with little restriction, while larger businesses making significant income from it could be required to share a percentage of their revenue with the government.

This model would be distinct from the conventional software licensing model where companies pay a standard subscription fee or a charge based on usage. Revenue sharing ties the payment to the commercial success of the product built on the AI model.

Alibaba would be a winner if its technology helps customers build profitable services and early-stage developers avoid big initial costs.

Large Users Would Have New Obligations

The plan would probably be limited to organisations over certain commercial or usage thresholds.

Alibaba would need to define what a large user is. Possible metrics include annual revenue, number of customers, computing volume, or income generated from AI-enabled products.

Rules would have to be clear because the model could be used by companies as just one piece of a much larger platform. But it could be hard to get the precise revenue attributable to the AI system.

Open Source Community May Respond Cautiously

Open source developers often have the luxury of being able to use, modify and distribute software with few commercial strings attached.

The need to share revenue could thus lead to disputes over whether the model can still be considered fully open source. Some licenses allow access to model weights but do not allow commercial use, so they are better described as open-weight models.

Developers will dig through the official license to see if the new policy impacts existing users, or only future versions.

Possible Benefits to Smaller Developers

If startups and independent developers are exempted until they reach a meaningful level of revenue, the reported scheme could still be attractive to them.

This would enable teams to test ideas, build products and attract customers without having to pay expensive licensing fees upfront. Alibaba only made money when those products were commercially successful.”

This structure may allow for more experimentation and a stronger ecosystem for the model.
